Is the Art of Handwriting Lost?
In my mission to declutter and live a simplified life, I ran across a couple of boxes full of cards and letters. I had completely forgotten that over the past 30 plus years of my life I had kept every letter and card ever written to me. So on rainy Sunday afternoon with a nice glass of Malbec and I began to read every single card and letter.
Memories I had forgotten came flooding back, old friendships long lost due to lack of communication, letters from my high school sweetheart, family from far away. As I read each letter and card I remembered a time in our lives when going to the mailbox wasn’t only to get the bills but to also see familiar handwriting. A time before Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Skype, Google+ and all the other social media avenues we use to communicate with each other.
In this age of electronic communication I hardly even go to the mailbox anymore… nothing exciting is waiting for me there but the occasional bill. Now a days we send tweets when it’s someone’s birthday, Instagram to wish people well, happy holidays via group email …. it is much simpler to hit send.
Now don’t get me wrong I am a Chica that loves technology… adore it actually. But it sure would be nice to receive the occasional “love” letter every once in awhile. How much happier would our world be if we all took a minute to drop a note in the mailbox to someone we loved or just to keep in touch with that very special friend. Think about it … the impact you make when you send a letter in the mail. The time it took to hand write the letter and without spell check no less, place it in the envelope, add a stamp and drop it in the mail. So think about the feeling of opening your mailbox to see a special note from someone special. What a lovely thought…
If you want to receive a handwritten note from Chica send me an email with your name and address at ChicaAboutTown@gmail.com and in a few weeks check your mailbox… your actual mailbox not your email.
I want to start a movement!
Cheers,
Chica
